What to look for when shopping for car insurance and auto insurance
We can all remember when we were fifteen years old and anxious to take the written test for a driver’s permit to operate an automobile. We couldn’t wait to take the driver’s test itself after the requisite time period had elapsed. We wanted to take to the roads and highways to “drive” to fun locations and to visit with our friends. There was no thought given to the responsibility that involved the operation of an automobile on a public street.
Auto insurance was something that parents took care of for their budding young drivers. But now that we’re adults and have families of our own, just how do we shop for this necessity?
We shop within our budget, to begin the experience of choosing auto insurance. Auto insurance rates vary from state to state, and from company to company. Obtain quotes from the most popular auto insurers. Compare them with what the coverages are that are being quoted.
Coverages will be for damages to your own automobile sustained in an accident, and also for damages to the other vehicle as well, if the cause of the accident was deemed your fault. These coverages are referred to as property damage, and liability coverage, respectively. Try to obtain the maximum limits of coverage that your budget will allow.
Deductible amounts will also affect the premiums quoted. Higher deductible amounts which you will be paying before your insurance company becomes obligated under its policy, will cost less in premium.
Uninsured motorist coverage is also an area to be concerned with when shopping for a good auto insurance policy. Needless to say, there are many drivers who risk being involved in an accident or stopped by a police officer, yet carry no auto insurance. You would best be served by having this additional coverage in case the other driver is one of these “at risk”, or uninsured motorists.
Towing and rental car coverages are also to be considered while examining car insurance policies from several carriers. It is a good idea to have towing fees covered as well as some portion of the daily fee for a rental car. Should your car be disabled in an accident, you have the assurance that you will have transportation in the interim.
As importantly, investigate the claims response history of the auto insurers you are considering. It does matter how quickly a claim is handled once it has been filed. Speak to the customer service personnel of the company and get a feel for the company’s personality.
